What is Web Accessibility?
Web Accessibility first came to the forefront with the passing of the DDA 1995
(Disability Discrimination Act). In extremely brief terms the act set out goals
that all services should and would be made accessible to everyone, regardless
of any disability that they may have.
In 1994, a year prior to the Act being passed by government, the World Wide Web
Consortium (W3C) was founded with the sole purpose to building a consensus around
Web technologies. W3C pursues the mission of a totally accessible web community
by creating standards, recommendations, and software and discussion platforms.
Why should you care?
OK, other that the legal requirements of an accessible website, we should also be
focusing on the massive benefits that come alone for the ride. By making the pages
accessible we are potentially increasing our audience by 16% (10 million users)
in the UK alone. By making our pages accessible we are also reducing our cross
browser compatibility issues of the past. Last but by no means least accessible
pages potentially increase our page ranking because search engines such as
Google can see the content easier.
Why do we care?
Rake Mark Solutions are very proud of the work we do, and driving forward towards a
better web community for all users has got to be a good thing.
Our developers will continue to research, learn and implement as new standards
and guidelines as they are set to achieve the best results possible for you,
our clients.
